Police swoop near Barlinnine & seize ‘drugs’ after witnesses spot drones flying nearby

POLICE officers swarmed an area near HMP Barlinnie twice in the space of just over two hours after drones were spotted flying close to the prison.

Cops seized suspected drugs after they initially received reports of a remote-controlled aircraft flying near the Glasgow nick on Gartcraig Road at around 11.45pm last night.

Searches were also carried out for a man on an e-bike who was spotted acting “suspiciously” in the area.

However, police say there was no trace of him.

A few hours later, officers received another report of a drone flying near the notorious jail at around 2.25am this morning.

A device and a quantity of suspected controlled drugs were recovered near to the prison grounds.

It’s understood police are following positive lines of enquiry.

Inspector Max Shaw said: “Around 11.45pm on Wednesday, 4 September, police received a report of a drone flying near to HMP Barlinnie.

“Officers attended and recovered quantity of items including suspected controlled drugs in an area of open ground near to Gartcraig Road.

“Searches were carried out for a man seen acting suspiciously in the area who may have been using an e-bike, however there was no trace.

“Following a further report of a drone flying near to HMP Barlinnie around 2.25am on Thursday, 5 September, a device and a quantity of suspected controlled drugs were subsequently recovered near to the prison grounds.

“With positive lines of enquiry, we are working with our partners in the Scottish Prison Service as an investigation is carried out.

“We would encourage anyone with information to call police on 101, quoting incident 4296 of 4 September.
