COPS have vowed to crack down “swiftly and robustly” on any troublemakers at a controversial pro-UK rally this weekend.

The demo, which has been backed by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, will be held in Glasgow this weekend.

Protesters will gather at George Square in the city centre on Saturday.

A counter rally is also expected to be held as cops will be on high alert.

Assistant Chief Constable Gary Ritchie said Police Scotland has been in talks with both sets of demonstrators.

The top cop added that officers have a proportionate policing plan.

Demonstrators have been warned over violence and unrest.

Last month, there was speculation that a far-right rally would be held in Scotland while rioting took place south of the border following the horror killings of three schoolgirls in Southport, Merseyside.

Anti-racism campaigners peacefully gathered to guard hotels housing asylum seekers in Paisley and Bathgate, West Lothian, amid fears over similar disorder in Scotland.

But weeks on from the chaos in towns and cities across England and Northern Ireland, a far-right rally will take place north of the border.

Mr Ritchie said: “We are aware of a planned protest in George Square, Glasgow, on Saturday, 7 September, and a proportionate policing plan is in place.

“Police Scotland is a rights-based organisation and we have been engaging directly with the protest groups to ensure public safety, while balancing their right to peacefully demonstrate.

“Violence and disorder are not legitimate protest and anyone who engages in disorder will be dealt with swiftly and robustly.”

In July, Robinson said that a “pro-UK peaceful protest” would be held in Glasgow this month.

Protesters are set to gather in George Square around 10am.

Rallies are expected to get underway around noon.

A barrier will be set up between both sets of protesters which will occupied officers.

Stand Up To Racism posted on social media: “Glasgow calling! On saturday @standuptoracismglasgow are taking to the streets to show the far right they’re not welcome. If you’re in Scotland make sure you’re there and help with the mobilisation.”
