Budge’s savagery against his estranged wife was captured on CCTV cameras.

The brute earlier pleaded guilty to the crazed car-kill bid that left his ex with lung and liver damage, internal bleeding and rib and ankle fractures.

Judge Lord Lake today said the sickening footage was “quite horrifying to watch” and told Budge he’d used his motor as a weapon.

He added: “The callousness and cruelty of your actions are astonishing.”

The judge told the High Court in Edinburgh it was remarkable Mrs Budge survived the murderous attack.

But he noted the contents of a victim impact statement which revealed she still suffers both physically and mentally.

First offender Budge, of Edinburgh, admitted assaulting his spouse on April 14 last year at Muirhouse Parkway, in Edinburgh.

Horror footage of the scene showed Budge performing a U-turn and steering the vehicle over her again as she lay wounded.

We told how Sandra had left her husband of 33 years weeks before the attack following a five-year campaign of abuse.

Terrified loved ones – including a young lad – saw the sickening incident unfold after she parked near her new flat in the city’s Silverknowes.

She remained at the infirmary until June 12 when she was transferred to another hospital for rehabilitation.

Police attempted to trace Budge and found his car abandoned at a car park at an Asda store, in Dunfermline, in Fife.

On the day after the attempted murder officers in Glasgow were alerted to a man in the River Clyde.

Budge was rescued from the water and taken to hospital and he was arrested after he was deemed fit for release.

Budge also pled guilty to assaulting the victim on a previous occasion between April 2016 and April the following year when he put his hands around her throat.

He also admitted pursuing a course of abusive behaviour towards her when he shouted and swore at her, called her names, prodded her on the head with his fingers, pushed her onto a bed and subjected her to excessive text messages and calls.

Budge was said to have a bad temper and called his wife a ‘slut’ and a ‘frigid bitch’ among other insults.

Defence counsel Mark Stewart KC said of Budge: “He has a history of working consistently, diligently and providing for his family.

“He is deeply remorseful and sorry for what has occurred.”

The roads were closed by cops on the day of Budge’s horror assault in Edinburgh.

Lord Lake told Budge he would have faced an 11 years but for his guilty pleas.

The judge made a non-harassment order prohibiting Budge from contacting or attempting to contact his wife for 15 years.

Moira Orr, who leads on homicide and major crime for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, said: “William Budge is a violent and cruel domestic abuser whose extremely reckless actions could have had devastating consequences.

“Our thoughts and best wishes remain with his former partner as she continues to deal with the lasting trauma caused by this barbaric individual.”
