COPS are investigating a separate incident at Ibrox after Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers was also targeted with an object from the stands.

The Hoops gaffer wasn’t the only one who had missiles aimed in his direction as club record-signing Arne Engels was struck with what appeared to be a coin late on in the second half.

Soccer player Arne Engels is injured on the field and attended to by a referee and other players.

The match was halted by referee Don Robertson when the Belgian fell to the turf after he was hit just above the eye with the missile from a section of Gers supporters.

The player received treatment and the object – believed to be a £1 coin – was handed to a police officer who then bagged it up as evidence.

The shocking incident marred what was meant to be a day of celebration for the Light Blues after Philippe Clement picked up his first derby win after six previous failed attempts.

But SunSport can reveal cops are also looking into a separate coin-throwing incident where Rodgers was targeted.

He wasn’t hit but it’s believed a coin landed close to him.

On the two missile throwing episodes, a Celtic spokesperson said: “We understand that Police Scotland are currently investigating two separate incidents.”

The Parkhead club have also blasted “repeated targeting” of players and coaches during recent matches at Ibrox.

During a 2-1 win for Celtic in April 2022, Rangers yobs targeted Celtic players with glass and bottles, and goalkeeper Joe Hart was spotted clearing debris from the goalmouth while being assisted by Rangers staff and players, including Kemar Roofe.

During that same match, objects were seen hurled towards Portuguese winger Jota while he took a corner, and a Celtic physio was left requiring stitches after being hit on the head by a bottle flung from the stands.

The following year, a Celtic fan was left bleeding after being hit with a bottle during the new year clash in Govan.

Jota and Matt O’Riley were then pictured picking up what appeared to be lighters thrown from punters in the Broomloan Road Stand during a return match at Ibrox in May.

The Celtic statement continued: “The repeated targeting of our players and staff with missiles is quite appalling and completely unacceptable”.

Rangers condemned the incident involving Engels and insisted they will be assisting cops with their investigation.

A statement read: “Rangers FC condemns this incident in the strongest possible terms.

“The club confirm it will assist Police Scotland with their investigation.”
