Teenager, 16, dies after being hit by taxi in tragic crash as probe launched

A TEENAGE boy has died after he was knocked down by a taxi in a Scots town.

The lad, 16, was struck by the black Mercedes Vito on Main Street in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, on Tuesday afternoon.

Medics raced him to the Queen Elizabeth UniversityHospital in Glasgow where he tragically died yesterday.

Cops locked down the road after the crash as they began investigating the tragic collision.

It was closed for over four hours as their probe got underway.

A 58-year-old man was arrested in connection with alleged road traffic offence.

He was later released pending further enquiries.

A probe is underway into the crash and anyone with information has been urged to contact police.

Traffic cops have said any dashcam footage could be vital in helping them find out what happened.

Sergeant Gemma Blackadder said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the teenager who died at this terrible time.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are appealing to anyone who has not already spoken to officers to get in touch if you think you can help.

“I would also appeal for anyone who was driving in the area and who may have dash-cam footage that could assist to contact us.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “Road Policing officers are appealing for information following a fatal crash in Rutherglen.

“The incident happened on Main Street around 4.10pm on Tuesday, 5 November, and involved a black Mercedes Vito taxi and a 16-year-old male pedestrian.

Emergency services attended and the 16-year-old was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he died on Saturday, 9 November.

“A 58-year-old man was arrested in connection with a road traffic offence and released pending further enquiries.

“The road was closed until around 8.15pm to allow for an investigation at the scene.”
